When economic times get shaky, families get shaken. They worry about the mortgage payment, the car
payment, the utility bills and most importantly, about putting food on the table.
When you do your weekly shopping at the grocery store this week, keep these tips in mind and watch your
bill drop.

1. Shop the outside aisles and avoid shopping the inside aisles. The outside aisles generally have the
sales and deals, the inside aisles usually contain the more high dollar items.

2. When venturing into the inside aisles, make sure to look down at the bottom shelves and not at eye
level. Many manufacturers pay for eye level placement, and therefore the products are more expensive.

3. By the store branded products. They are normally up to 40% less expensive then the big brands and
are almost always made by the same manufacturer. Also avoided buying national brands as they are often
more expensive.

4. Compare not only price but also the volume or weight of the product. While a product may cost less, so
also will the amount of product purchased. Take this extra step to increase your buying power.

5. Statistics have shown that walking the store, from left to right instead of right to left, reduces the amount
that people purchase. Try this to see if you save some additional money.

6. Search for coupons online and in your local newspapers but compare the coupon price with the price of
the product you normally buy. You may still not be saving any money if the coupon is for a national brand
and you normally buy the store brand.

7. Avoid taking your "little helpers", along with you to the store. Research has shown that little helpers
increase the grocery bill because we as mothers and fathers generally give in to the little demands.
8. Make sure you eat before going to the grocery store. Unfortunately, visiting the grocery store on an
empty stomach tends to increase the grocery bill as well. I shop with a baggie of crackers and munch as I
go, try it, you might be surprised.

9. Avoid going to the grocery store when you are in a hurry. In a rush situation, we grab the first things we
see and these items are overpriced and strategically placed. Take your time in the grocery store and your
bottom line will be a little sweeter.

10. Plan one non meat meal for your family a week. Something as simple as spaghetti and sauce is good
and hearty and costs just $1.25 for the entire meal if you are feeding a family of four.
Following these tips has helped my family save over $100 to $150 a month at the grocery store. Let me
know how much it saves you and your family!
